About Us
About Our Therapy Services
Therapy at Affinity isn’t about fixing what’s wrong with you. It’s about helping your nervous system feel safe enough to heal, understanding patterns that no longer serve you, and building capacity for the life you actually want to live. All of our services are provided 100% virtually across Colorado.
Understanding Virtual Therapy Services at Affinity Counseling
If you’ve never been to therapy before, or if past therapy experiences left you feeling misunderstood or unsatisfied, you might be wondering what actually happens in sessions and whether it can really help. Maybe you’re skeptical that talking to someone will change anything. Perhaps you’ve heard therapy described as “just venting” or “paying someone to listen,” and you’re not sure that’s worth your time or money. Or maybe you’re curious but overwhelmed by all the different approaches, credentials, and specializations out there.
Virtual therapy services, when done well, are far more than conversation. They’re a structured, intentional process designed to help you understand yourself more deeply, heal wounds that keep you stuck, build skills for navigating life’s challenges, and create the kind of relationships and life that feel authentic and sustainable. At Affinity Counseling of Colorado, we provide online therapy services that are grounded in neuroscience, informed by attachment research, and delivered with deep relational attunement, all through secure, accessible remote sessions.
What is therapy at its core? It’s a collaborative relationship where you work with a trained professional to address concerns, process difficult experiences, understand patterns, and develop new ways of being in the world. But the way we practice goes beyond traditional talk therapy models. We treat therapy as a whole-person experience that addresses your nervous system, your relationships, your identity, your body, and the systems you navigate. And importantly, all of our teletherapy services are provided 100% virtually, meaning you can access specialized care from anywhere in Colorado.
What Makes Virtual Therapy Services Effective
Research consistently shows that the most important factor in successful therapy isn’t the specific technique or theoretical orientation a therapist uses. It’s the quality of the therapeutic relationship itself. When you feel seen, understood, accepted, and genuinely cared for by your therapist, healing becomes possible. This holds true for video counseling services just as much as traditional in-person work. In fact, many people find that remote therapy creates a sense of safety that allows for deeper vulnerability precisely because they’re in their own environment.
Effective online therapy services also require attention to your nervous system. If you’re in a state of fight, flight, freeze, or collapse, your brain literally cannot access the parts needed for reflection, insight, or behavior change. This is why we begin our virtual therapy services by helping you develop nervous system regulation. We use polyvagal-informed practices and somatic approaches to help your body feel safe before we move into deeper processing or pattern work.
Another key element of effective teletherapy services is appropriate pacing. Many people have experienced therapy that moved too fast, pushed them into intensity before they were ready, or tried to process trauma before establishing adequate safety and resources. Others have experienced therapy that stayed too surface-level, never getting to the root issues. Our approach to remote therapy finds the balance, moving at the speed your nervous system can tolerate while still engaging in meaningful depth work.
Finally, effective therapy contextualizes your struggles. We don’t treat symptoms as isolated problems to be eliminated. We understand them as adaptations that made sense in the environments where they developed, shaped by your family history, your identities, your social location, and the systems you navigate. This contextual understanding prevents the pathologizing and blame that can happen in therapy that ignores social realities.
The Affinity Approach to Virtual Therapy Services
Our video counseling services are built on several core principles that distinguish our approach from conventional therapy. These aren’t just abstract values. They shape how every session feels and what we focus on together.
Somatic First, Always
We believe that healing begins in the body, not in the mind. Trauma, attachment wounds, and chronic stress live in your nervous system as physiological patterns, not just as thoughts or memories. Our approach to online therapy services means we always attend to what’s happening in your body, tracking breath, tension, sensation, and nervous system states. We use modalities like Brainspotting, body-based grounding practices, and regulation techniques that help your system shift before we try to process content cognitively.
This doesn’t mean we ignore thoughts, emotions, or stories. It means we start with the physiological foundation that allows those other dimensions to be processed effectively. Many clients tell us this is the first therapy where someone actually noticed and worked with what was happening in their body, not just what they were saying. This somatic foundation translates seamlessly to our virtual therapy services.
Relational and Attachment-Informed
Humans are bonding mammals. We’re wired for connection, and our early attachment experiences shape how we relate to ourselves and others throughout life. Our teletherapy services are deeply informed by attachment science and Emotionally Focused Therapy. We understand that many presenting concerns (anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, identity confusion) have roots in attachment wounds or insecure relational patterns.
The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a vehicle for healing these wounds. We create a space where you can experience secure attachment, practice expressing needs, repair ruptures, and develop new relational templates. This isn’t just about understanding attachment intellectually. It’s about having corrective emotional experiences that help your nervous system learn that connection can be safe, even through video counseling services.
Parts Work and Internal System Awareness
We work from the understanding that your mind is naturally multiple. You have different parts with different perspectives, needs, and protective strategies. When these parts are in conflict, you experience internal struggle, self-criticism, or feeling pulled in different directions. Through Internal Family Systems approaches, our remote therapy helps you understand these parts with compassion, work with their protective functions, and develop internal harmony and self-leadership.
This parts-aware approach is particularly valuable for working with ambivalence, perfectionism, procrastination, or patterns where you know what you “should” do but can’t seem to do it. Instead of trying to override or eliminate protective parts, we help them relax and update their strategies, creating lasting change rather than willpower-based suppression.
Trauma-Informed and Contextually Aware
All of our online therapy services are grounded in trauma-informed care principles. This means we prioritize safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. We never force intensity or push you to process material before you’re ready. We recognize that trauma isn’t just about discrete events but can also be developmental, relational, or systemic. Our approach addresses all these forms.
We also practice therapy through a lens of social justice and cultural competence. We understand that your mental health is shaped not just by personal history but by your identities, your social location, and the systems of power and oppression you navigate. This contextual awareness is integrated throughout our virtual therapy services, not treated as an afterthought.
Creative and Embodied
Sometimes the truths you need to access aren’t available through words alone. Our approach incorporates creative and expressive practices, theatre-informed techniques, and embodied exploration. This might include working with metaphor, imagery, movement, or other non-verbal pathways to insight and integration. These methods help you access material that talk therapy alone might miss, and they adapt beautifully to the remote format.
What to Expect from Our Video Counseling Services
Understanding what actually happens in virtual therapy services can help reduce anxiety about beginning and give you a sense of whether our approach aligns with what you’re looking for.
Initial Consultation
Before committing to ongoing teletherapy services, we offer a free 15-20 minute consultation. This is a no-pressure conversation to determine whether we’re a good fit. We’ll ask what brings you to therapy, what you’re hoping to find, and what your previous experiences have been like. We’ll also explain our approach and answer any questions you have about the process, including how our 100% virtual format works and what technology you’ll need.
First Session
Your first official session is typically 60-75 minutes. This is where we begin building our therapeutic relationship and understanding your story. We’ll explore what’s bringing you to therapy now, discuss your history and context, begin identifying patterns or themes, and start developing goals. We’ll also establish how we’ll work together: frequency of sessions, communication between sessions, and what you can expect from the process. Even in this first session of our online therapy services, we’re tracking your nervous system and beginning to assess what kinds of approaches might be most helpful.
Ongoing Sessions
Regular sessions within our remote therapy format are typically 50-75 minutes, scheduled weekly or biweekly depending on your needs and preferences. Each session generally follows a flexible structure: we check in about what’s alive for you, engage in focused work on identified themes or patterns, and close with integration and grounding. The specific modalities we use (whether Brainspotting, parts work, attachment-focused exploration, or somatic practices) depend on what you’re working with and what your nervous system needs in that moment.
As our work progresses through our virtual therapy services, you’ll likely notice shifts in how you relate to yourself, how you experience your body, and how you navigate relationships. These changes often happen gradually rather than dramatically. Therapy isn’t about sudden transformations or quick fixes. It’s about sustainable, embodied change that builds over time through consistent attention and practice.
Extended and Intensive Sessions
Sometimes deeper work requires more time than a standard session allows. We offer 90-minute sessions for intensive processing, complex parts work, or when you need more space to go deep without feeling rushed. We also provide therapy intensives that span 2-3 hours or multiple consecutive sessions for focused trauma processing, major transitions, or breakthrough work. These extended formats are particularly valuable for clients who need concentrated attention on specific issues.
Types of Virtual Therapy Services We Offer
We provide several formats to meet different needs, all delivered through our secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.
Individual Online Therapy
Our primary service is individual therapy for adults dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, burnout, identity exploration, and other challenges. Sessions provide a dedicated space for your own healing, growth, and self-understanding without having to manage others’ needs or reactions. This is the foundation of our teletherapy services.
Couples Counseling
Our couples therapy helps partners navigate relationship distress, communication breakdowns, attachment wounds, infidelity recovery, and intimacy concerns. We use Emotionally Focused Therapy combined with somatic awareness to help couples understand their negative cycles, access underlying needs and fears, and create new patterns of secure connection. Both partners join the same virtual session, and we work with the relationship system as a whole through our video counseling services.
Family Therapy
We provide family therapy for adult family relationships, including parent-adult child dynamics, sibling relationships, and multigenerational patterns. Family therapy helps identify and shift stuck patterns, improve communication, address boundary issues, and heal relational wounds. Family members can join from the same location or from different locations depending on what works best for their situation.
Group Therapy
Our therapeutic groups, called Affinity Circles, provide community-based healing focused on somatic regulation, relational connection, and shared witnessing. Groups run in 8-12 week cycles and offer a different kind of healing than individual work: the medicine of being seen and supported by others navigating similar experiences. All group sessions happen virtually through our online therapy services, allowing people from across Colorado to connect.
Specialized Offerings
Beyond our core virtual therapy services, we offer specialized support including burnout recovery, identity exploration work, and creative embodiment practices. These services address specific needs that benefit from focused, specialized attention within our overall therapeutic framework.

Conditions and Concerns Our Remote Therapy Addresses
We provide teletherapy services for a wide range of presenting concerns. While every person’s experience is unique, these are some of the most common issues we help people navigate through our video counseling services:
We work with anxiety disorders and panic, depression and mood concerns, PTSD and complex trauma, attachment and relationship issues, grief and loss, burnout and chronic stress, perfectionism and self-criticism, dissociation and disconnection, and concerns related to navigating oppression.
Our specializations include working with childhood trauma, developmental trauma, relational trauma, and identity-based trauma. We provide affirming support for LGBTQIA+ individuals navigating coming out, gender exploration, or minority stress. We work with highly sensitive people who have been pathologized for their depth and intensity. We support helpers, healers, and activists experiencing vicarious trauma or moral injury.
We also address life stage concerns like major transitions, identity development, relationship endings, career changes, and existential questions about meaning and purpose. Our somatic approach through online therapy services is effective for all of these because we address the underlying nervous system patterns that contribute to diverse presenting concerns.
What Virtual Therapy Services Cannot Do
It’s important to be clear about what therapy can and cannot offer. Remote therapy is powerful, but it’s not magic, and it’s not appropriate for every situation.
Virtual therapy services cannot provide immediate crisis intervention or emergency services. If you’re experiencing acute suicidal ideation, psychiatric emergency, or immediate danger, you need crisis resources or emergency care, not outpatient therapy. We can help you develop safety plans and connect with appropriate resources, but we’re not equipped for 24/7 crisis support.
Teletherapy services also cannot change other people or systems. We can help you understand relationship dynamics, develop communication skills, and shift your own patterns, but we can’t make your partner, family member, or employer change. We can help you navigate oppressive systems with more agency and less internalized harm, but we can’t eliminate those systems.
Additionally, our video counseling services require that you’re located in Colorado during sessions, as our clinical license limits our practice to this state. If you live outside Colorado or travel frequently, we’ll need to discuss whether we can maintain continuity of care or whether referrals might be more appropriate.
How Our 100% Virtual Format Works
All of our services are provided entirely through secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions. This isn’t a temporary accommodation. It’s our intentional practice model, designed to maximize accessibility while maintaining the depth and connection that makes therapy effective.
Our online therapy services happen through a user-friendly platform that you access from any computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and internet connection. You don’t need special software or technical expertise. We provide clear instructions before your first session and offer tech support if issues arise. Most people find that after one or two sessions, the virtual format fades into the background and the therapeutic connection becomes primary.
Practicing somatic work virtually requires some adaptations, but it’s absolutely effective within our remote therapy model. We guide body-based practices that you do in your own space. We track your nervous system responses through video. We create the same relational presence and attunement that we would in person. Many clients actually prefer the format. They feel safer in their own environment, appreciate the elimination of travel time, and find it easier to drop into vulnerable work when they’re already home.
Our 100% virtual model also means you can access specialized care regardless of where you live in Colorado. Whether you’re in Denver, a mountain community, a rural town, or anywhere in between, you have access to the same quality of virtual therapy services. Getting Started with Virtual Therapy Services
If you’re considering therapy and wondering whether our approach might be right for you, the best first step is scheduling a free consultation. This brief conversation gives us both a chance to determine fit before you commit to ongoing work.
During the consultation, we’ll explore what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re hoping to find, and whether our somatic, relational, trauma-informed approach aligns with your needs. We’ll explain how our teletherapy services work, answer questions about our 100% virtual format, discuss practical considerations like scheduling and fees, and help you decide if moving forward feels right.
There’s no pressure to commit after the consultation. It’s simply an opportunity to explore whether working together makes sense. Some people know immediately that our approach resonates. Others need time to think about it or want to consult with other providers before deciding. Both are completely valid.

Comprehensive Holistic Care
I can’t say enough good things about this clinic! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and attentive. They take a holistic approach to health and truly listen to your concerns. After following their advice, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my energy levels and overall wellness. Highly recommend!

This clinic is a gem for anyone seeking natural and comprehensive care. From the friendly front desk staff to the expert practitioners, everyone made me feel valued and cared for. The naturopathic treatments were tailored to my specific needs, and I finally feel like my health is on the right track.

The clinic offers top-notch services and a welcoming atmosphere. The doctor took the time to explain everything in detail and offered practical solutions to improve my health naturally. My only suggestion would be to reduce wait times, but overall, it was an excellent experience.

I’ve visited many clinics before, but this one stands out for its compassionate approach. The practitioners here truly care about your well-being and focus on treating the root cause of your issues rather than just the symptoms. I feel healthier and more balanced than ever!

Meet Erica Johnson, MA, LMFT
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, educator, and founder of Affinity Counseling and Affinity Pathfinder.
My work is shaped by a lifelong curiosity about how people survive, adapt, and make meaning in difficult systems—and how often sensitive, thoughtful people are misunderstood in the process.
Through my own experiences, global travel, creative work in theatre, and years of clinical practice, I learned that many people are not broken. They are overwhelmed, misattuned to, or carrying more than anyone was meant to carry alone.
I bring this understanding into every therapeutic relationship. My approach centers nervous system safety, honest relationship, and deep respect for each person’s story.
I am especially committed to creating spaces where people who feel unsafe in their own minds, bodies, or relationships can begin to feel grounded, worthy, and at home in themselves again.
Being a therapist, for me, is not about having answers. It is about showing up with presence, humility, and care—and continually returning to my own grounded center so I can offer that steadiness to others.
I consider it a privilege to witness my clients’ courage, resilience, and growth.
